Farm Projects - Increasing the Local Food Supply

Community Farms

The Community Farms Program is at the forefront of encouraging alternative forms of land ownership to ensure our agricultural lands remain in production in perpetuity. We help landowners, farmers, and local communities develop and support community farm models in BC, conserve farmland, and build healthy, local food systems. More...

Seed Security - BC Seeds project

Our BC Organic Seed Strategy project, in partnership with several seed producers throughout BC, has created a database of organic seeds currently being produced in the province. We have produced a "best practices" guide to running an on-farm seed saving business that is available in print and electronic formats.  More...

Grain Chain

Our grain project aims to expand the production of grains, flour and bread in SW BC where there is an increasing number of farmers growing grain. The goal of this project is to network the growers and to provide workshops around planting, growing methods, harvesting, milling and baking.

We've been working with Chris Hergesheimer, our grain researcher, who completed his MA in Sociology (SFU 2009) with this thesis "Weaving chains of grain: Exploring the stories, links and boundaries of small scale grain initiatives in Southwestern British Columbia."

Visit the Urban Grains website for the grain CSA part of the project.

Shared Harvest:
Four regionally based websites that support the trade of food
and agricultural products

A network of Shared Harvest websites covering Metro Vancouver, Victoria, the Okanagan and the Fraser Valley provides free online classifieds for locally produced food and agricultural products. For farm businesses, www.sharedharvest.ca increases buying and selling opportunities; for the public it means greater access to local food. Farmers, processors, grocers, restaurants, distributors and the general public can post and browse ads for free.

Visit the individual websites at,

FFCF is working towards a network of Shared Harvest sites across BC to support the trade of food and agricultural products within and between regions. Visit FarmFolkCityFolk.ca to learn more about our programs.

Biomass Trader, a BC-wide trading site for agriculture
and food processing “waste”

Residual biomass feedstocks are fast being recognised as a resource rather than waste material. Organic matter that in the past has either been ploughed under or sent to landfill can now be traded on the Biomass Trader.

The Biomass Trader offers free classified ad space for,

Manure Fats and oils
Renewable natural gas Garden waste
Abattoir waste (non-SRM) Hauling services
Soil amendments and more!

Composters are looking for quality materials to create soil amendments and the emerging bioenergy sector needs manure and other feedstocks in order to produce methane, biodiesel and other bioenergy products.

Sell it. Buy it. Trade it. Visit: www.BiomassTrader.ca/BC
